I use FrontPage 2000 to create my Web pages - what do I need to do?

You need to let us know that you will be using FrontPage to publish your web because we need to install the FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) to enable support for FrontPage publishing and other features. Installing the FPSE can be done anytime. when the FPSE are installed you are assigned by us a FrontPage Administrators user ID and Password for your web site. If you are in doubt as to whether the FPSe are installed for your site or now wish the FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) installed, e-mail us at ispsupport@zytrax.com with your web site address e.g. www.mydomain.com.

We typically will only accept such requests from a known location and may ask you to verify your identity. When we install the FPSE you will be e-mailed with an administrators user ID and password. You may change this password at any time but not the User ID. To publish your web from FrontPage follow these instructions. We currently install the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions which will work with FrontPage '98, '97 and other FrontPage clients.

What are the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions (FPSE) and are they installed?

The FrontPage Server Extensions are a set of features that Microsoft provides to add functionality to web publishing, authoring and run-time browsing. We do NOT add the FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) automatically when we create a 'shell' web site for you instead we ask you if you will be using FrontPage to publish your web site and only if the answer is YES do install the FPSE. If you change your mind or move from some other package to FrontPage your web site can be upgraded at any time with the FPSE and with no loss of contents.

I use FrontPage '98 to create my Web - what do I need to do?

You need to let us know that you will be using FrontPage to publish your web because we need to install the FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) to enable support for FrontPage publishing and other features. I do not use FrontPage to create my Web pages - what do I need to do?

If you use another Web authoring package or HTML editor (e.g. DreamWeaver etc) you will have to use FTP to update your web. You need to keep track of the pages you modified (many web authoring packages do this automatically) and then upload them to your web site either using the built-in features of your Web authoring pacage or using an FTP client such as CuteFTP. When your web site is initially created you are assigned an FTP user name and password. You must use this FTP User Name and password to update your web site.

What is a 'sub-web' in FrontPage 2000 ('98) and can I create one automatically?

A 'sub-web' is a Microsoft term used to define a part of a web below the 'root-web' that may be administered and authored separately (see Microsoft's definitions). 'sub-webs' are typically only used in very large or dispersed organizations. You cannot set up a 'sub-web' automatically because we need to add the FrontPage server Extensions to the 'sub-web' for security purposes. If you need to create a 'sub-web' e-mail us at ispsupport@zytrax.com and provide the name of your web site (e.g. www.mydomain.com) and the directory name of the sub-web as it appears in FrontPage (e.g. 'purchasing' etc.). We will assign you a separate Administrator ID and password for the 'sub-web'.

What is a 'root-web' in FrontPage 2000 (or '98).

The 'root-web' is Microsoft's name for your web site i.e. if your web site is www.mydomain.com and you publish your web site to this address using the administrators ID and Password then this is your 'root-web'. (see Microsoft's definition).

I have created a form in FrontPage 2000 (or '98) which I want to send as e-mail - what do I do?

You may receive an indication when creating the form and selecting the 'e-mail form to..' option that the E-mail options of the FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) must be installed. The e-mail option is always installed whenever we add the FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) to a web site.  You need only tell us the FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) require to be installed nothing else.

What do you do when you set up a web site?

When we set up a web site for you we ALWAYS do three things :

1. We set up the required Domain Name Service (DNS) addresses to point to one of our local Web Servers (e.g. for www.mydomain.com)
2. We allocate a directory on one of our Web Servers to host your web site and create special permissions that will only allow you to update your web site (we notify you of this username and password which can be used for FTP web update).
3. We add to the web site a dummy entry (with file name index.html) indicating the site name (e.g. www.mydomain.com) and the fact that it is under construction. This page also contains information about our web server (Apache) and our hosting service. This information is automatically overwritten when you (or we) publish your actual web site.

Depending on what features you want we may also do any or all of the following:

1. Add the Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions (if you are using FrontPage to publish your web site) and e-mail you the FrontPage Adminstrator ID and password.
2. Create and Publish your web page (if you have asked us to do it)
3. Download your current web site into FrontPage 2000 and publish it to your new site (in this case we also add the FrontPage Server Extensions).

How do I migrate my web site from an existing host service to yours?

To migrate a web site to our service three things are required:

1. We need to create a space on one of our Web servers for your web site (this is a secure location so that only you can update your web) and add FrontPage Server Extensions if you require them.
2. The Domain Name Server (DNS) Record needs to point to our web host using an A record for the site name e.g. if the site will be called www.mydomain.com the DNS that is authoritative for your site needs an A record for www.
3. If you own the content of your site (i.e. you keep local copies of your web site) then you just publish it to our site using FTP or FrontPage's 'publish service). If you do not have the site content we can capture it for you into FrontPage and then publish it to our allocated site (and give you a copy).

That's all there is to it.

I want to set up a web site what do I do (and is it difficult)?

You need four things to create a web site:

1. A domain name e.g. if your web site will be www.mydomain.com then you will need to register domain.com (or .org or .ca etc.)
2. A web hosting Service (like ZyTrax Web Hosting) or a Web Server on your own PC (and a static IP address)
3. A Domain Name Server (DNS) entry that pints to your web site (most Web hosting sites look after this automatically)
4. Some software to create and publish your web site or you can subcontract the whole process to a web hosting company - like ZyTrax - or a specialist web creation company.

Is it difficult to create and build your own web?

No. It's not difficult but if you have better things to do with your time subcontract the lot to a Web hosting company (like us). Start with a simple site 3 to 5 pages and expect to pay no more than $100 per page (if you want a graphic artist to do the layout, or special photography etc. you will pay more - this may be a wise investment if 'look' is important). Keep control of the process and you can take it over whenever you feel the need - this is especially true if you anticipate a site with volatile content (otherwise you will pay for every change that is made).

If you want to develop and maintain your own web then we recommend you start with a web authoring package (most of them have 30 day trial periods so experiment with them). Generally most Web authoring packages are no more difficult to use than a word processor with full WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) capabilities.

I want to change the FrontPage administrators password for my web (or add new users)?

To change FrontPage Administrators password (or to add and authorize other users to edit or change your web) you must log onto the Web folder view of your web (not the disk based web). To log into the Web folder make sure you have no open webs in FrontPage.

1. Click the 'File' menu and select 'Open web'
2. In the dialog box that opens under 'Folder name' type http://www.mydomain.com (use your domain name)
3. Click 'Open'
4. Click the 'Tools' menu
5. Click 'Security' then select 'change password' or 'Permissions'
6. Make the necessary changes
7. Click 'File' menu then 'Close web'

The next time you publish your web will require the NEW password. ZyTrax no longer has a record of this password so keep it safe (use this procedure if you do lose it)

I have forgotten the FrontPage administrators password that I was assigned for my web?

If you have not changed the FrontPage password we assigned you then we can supply it to you again. We typically will only accept such requests from a known location and may ask you to verify your identity.

If you have changed your password then we have no way of getting access to your password, instead we will have to delete and re-install the FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) for your site and re-assign a new Administrator ID and Password. You DO NOT lose any web content if this happens. We typically will only accept such requests from a known location and may ask you to verify your identity.

How do I publish (or update) my web from FrontPage 2000 (or '98)?

If the FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) are installed just use the 'Publish Web...' menu item (on 'File' menu) to publish (or update) your web. At the security prompt enter your assigned User Id and Password (or your modified password) and the web update will be executed. Depending on the size of your web and the speed of your connection this may take 1 to 10 minutes.

NOTE: If you use FrontPage to publish your web site DO NOT use FTP as the FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) maintain an index of all pages and their creation and modification dates which will become outdated if FTP is used.

I can edit my pages directly on-line with FrontPage 2000 ('98) should I do this?

You can directly edit your web pages on-line using FrontPage using the web folder model of FrontPage. We recommend that you do NOT do this however even for very small changes. Instead we recommend you update your web on your local hard disc (the disk base web model) and then publish it. Our reasoning is that your web site is a valuable property (you may well invest many hundred of hours over time) and that you should always keep your own master copy of this property under your control. Also you can experiment and play around until you are happy before committing the change to your live web. Remember with on-line editing the world is watching you experiment.

What Web Server do you run?

Our web servers use:

Apache 1.3.19

FrontPage Server Extensions SR1.2 (4.0.2.2747)

We use Apache because it is the most widely deployed web server in operation supporting over 62% (Netcraft survey) of the web sites on the net, because it has fantastic power and flexibility and because of its excellent reputation for security.

What page is automatically loaded when my web site is accessed?

When your web site is entered at the root (e.g. www.mydomain.com) the web server looks for the following files (pages) in the order defined below in the root directory:

index.htm

index.html

index.shtml

index.php

index.cgi

default.htm

So if you have two files in your root directory named index.htm and index.html then index.htm would always be used as the opening web page.

NOTE: FrontPage always creates files with an .htm filename so when you publish your web site the FrontPage generated index.htm page always overrides our construction page (which is always named index.html).

How do I enable web addressing in the form www.mydomain.com/product ?

Each '/' after the root web name (in the example case the root web name is www.mydomain.com) indicates a directory on your web site (in the above example 'product' would be a directory) and  the web server looks for the following file names (pages) in the order defined below in the new directory ('product'):

index.htm

index.html

index.shtml

index.php

index.cgi

default.htm

So if you have two files named index.htm and default.html in the 'product' directory, then index.htm would always be loaded as the default page for this directory.

What software can I use to create or update my web site?

This is not an exhaustive list of web authoring packages and we DO NOT endorse any of the products listed, please satisfy yourself that they do the job you require.

Broadly web authoring software falls into three categories:

Full service suites

These suites manage the whole process of creating and publishing web sites of these the following are the best known examples (they will cost in the range $100 to $500+):

Microsoft FrontPage (part of the Office Professional Edition)

Macromedia DreamWeaver

SoftQuad HoTMetal

Adobe GoLive

HTML Editors

HTML editors help you to manually edit and create your HTML pages. HTML editors are very comprehensive but they do mean than you need to know quite a lot about HTML (the editor will stop you making simple errors). If you are interested in HTML and want to spend time learning it, this is a very low cost approach to a low volume site (cost $0 to $100) but you will also need a good book on HTML (cost $25 - S60):

HTML-Kit Free, with lots of add ons and we use it.

Text Editors

Not strictly web authoring software and not for the faint-hearted but...HTML is just text, you can use any text editor to create and edit HTML files (e.g. Notepad on Windows) but you need to understand HTML from the ground up - only contemplate doing this if you really are 'into' learning HTML (cost $0). We would advise you to create a simple web site with some other tool and only then start to experiment using this approach - you will know a lot at the end of the process.

What is the difference between a FrontPage Web folder and a disk based Web?

FrontPage has two editing models:

Web folders

In this case you open your on-line web and directly edit it on-line - you do not need to publish the changes its automatic. ZyTrax does not recommend you use this feature (see explanation) - other than for very simple or quick edits and even then only if you really have to.

Disk based Webs

In this case your web site is maintained on disk under your control. You can archive it, copy it, edit it and experiment without affecting your on-line web. You use the 'Publish' web feature to update your real web after you have completed all your changes. We always recommend this approach.

When I open my FrontPage Web I always get an authentication failure.

First ensure that you are using the correct user ID and Password assigned by us.

Second verify the security features of FrontPage as follows:

1. Click the Tools menu and select 'Options...'
2. Click the 'Proxy Settings..' button.
3. Select the security tab and select the 'Internet' Icon
4. Click the 'Custom Level..' button
5. Go to the end of the displayed window and find the section beginning 'User Authentication'
6. Ensure the button labeled 'Prompt for user name and password' is ON.
7. Click OK
8. Select the 'Local Intranet' button.
9. Click the 'Custom Level..' button
10. Go to the end of the displayed window and find the section beginning 'User Authentication'
11. Ensure the button labeled 'Prompt for user name and password' is ON.
12. Click OK
13. Select the 'Trusted Sites' button.
14. Click the 'Custom Level..' button
15. Go to the end of the displayed window and find the section beginning 'User Authentication'
16. Ensure the button labeled 'Prompt for user name and password' is ON.
17. Click OK
18. Select the 'Restricted Sites' button.
19. Click the 'Custom Level..' button
20. Go to the end of the displayed window and find the section beginning 'User Authentication'
21. Ensure the button labeled 'Prompt for user name and password' is ON.
22. Click OK
23. Click OK.
24. Try to open the web again.

How do I FTP to my web site?

When your web site is created it is allocated secure FTP space with a separate username and password. You can either use a normal FTP client (e.g. CuteFTP) or a web browser (normally only for downloading files). If you use a browser then you can either type the following line in the 'Address' or 'Location' field:

ftp://www.yourwebname.com

In which case you will be prompted for a username and password OR this funny looking format (in the case of all Netscape 4.7x and IE < 5.5 browsers you MUST use this format):

ftp://username:password@www.yourwebname.com
