User-Agent Strings - MS IE - Full

We keep only the most current and major releases in the main page. This is the complete list of all MS Internet Explorer strings that we have ever found or received - including those on the main page.

MS Explorer

The 900 pound gorilla of the browser business. IE 10 is currently (2011) being previewed on windows 7. MSIE 9.0 is now released - if you are using Vista or 7 (or you can hang onto IE 8.0) . And for XP you have a choice of IE6, 7 or 8. And for the rest of us - tough. Seems Trident is the MS rendering engine name (since IE8?) - the equivalent of Opera's Presto and Moz's Gecko. Microsoft's MSIE history page (Link from Riley McArdle - thanks).

There are also strings for Windows CE/IEMobile in this section for those of a curious disposition (and yes, they should be in the mobile section. What do you expect - consistency?).

Information about recognizing media center embedded in browser. From Rob Lehew - thanks.

Curious

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; InfoPath.1)

Explanation: This string indicates the request comes from an MS InfoPath (an MS Office extra application) and means that it may be collecting data for use in a forms based application. String from Juan Sotillo - thanks.

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0; Google Wireless Transcoder;)

Explanation: This one is the new google service that acts as a proxy and converts web sites to a mobile format - somewhat controversial because it seems to drop its own adsense data to make it all fit better. String from Lucy Thao - thanks. Now moved to google section.

MS Teams

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_12_4) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Teams/1.0.00.16451 Chrome/58.0.3029.110 Electron/1.7.1 Safari/537.36

Explanation: Microsoft Edge on Windows 10. With all that cloaking stuff in there it's miraculous that some sites don't support it (maybe because they don't claim support for ). No wonder MS are stuck with both MSIE and Edge. String from us - thanks - you're welcome.

MS Internet Explorer (MSIE) V11

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/7.0; rv:11.0) like Gecko

Previously there was a separate "64 bit" entry for Internet Explorer 9 in the start menu. Starting with IE10, there is only one and the switch between 32 bit and 64 bit can be made by switching on Enhanced Protection Mode.". String from Thu Win - thanks.

Explanation: Nothing too special about the above string ('cept its long) but Rob Lehew writes with following info about Media Center Browser recognition:

  1. If you're using the normal IE web browser from Windows Media Center PC..but NOT browsing from within the Media Center UI a version of "Media Center PC X.X" is added where "X.X":
    • "2.8" = Media Center 2004
    • "3.0" = Media Center 2005
    • "3.1" = Media Center 2005 + Update 1
    • "4.0" = Media Center 2005 + Update 2
  2. browsing the web from within the blue Media Center UI includes the above but adds additional information in the user agent string:
    • "MediaCenter 5.1.2600.2180" = Media Center 2004 or Media Center 2005 without Update 2
    • "MediaCenter 5.1.2710.2652" = Media Center 2005 + Update 2

More info. From Rob Lehew - thanks.

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0; .NET CLR 1.0.3705; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)

Explanation: This string has bit of history. We originally published it as a EudoraWeb string - since it was self identified by a site user as being that. However:

We got some email about this string suggesting that it was not eudora since it had no Eudora in it. To be fair the supplier of the string also voiced some doubt since it was left to the user to identify the string. If anyone can shed some more light on this topic - please email us and we'll publish.

We got some more comment which says it looks so much like a normal Win 2K that we've moved it. The suggestion is that both .NET strings are added when the MS WindowsUpdate system is used. Explanation from Matt Hair - thanks.

Mozilla/1.22 (compatible; MSIE 2.0d; Windows NT)

Explanation: Little suspicious that this really is MSIE 2.x. The base version on NT 4.0 as we recall was MSIE 3/4 so you would actually have to install version 2 ...mmmm. Joel Rea writes to tell us that MSIE 2 did ship with NT4.0 but that one of the SPs updated it to MSIE4 - our memories fail again. Thanks for writing Joel. BTW did you ever try to get MSIE 6 using MSIE4 - impossible. But what shipped with NT 3.51? Eric Bowman writes "No browser shipped with 3.51" This proves one only thing conclusively - Eric has a better memory than we do! Thanks for the update Eric. String from Erik - thanks
