All ZyTrax Routers contain two copies (Dual-Booted) of the Router application in FLASH. This enables a new application to be loaded while the system is operational. If the system fails or power is lost during the load, the load operation must be re-run when the system re-boots BUT the Router remains fully operational.
In a 'single booted' system, if there is a failure or power is lost during loading of a new application then the system is typically unusable and goes into a 'bootstrap' mode where it can only be loaded via a serial port or similar process. In Remote situations this either means training local personnel or dialing via modem (and the costs of an analog line) from a central location to re-establish the system.
In addition to Dual-Booting ZyTrax also uses a probation period to ensure that the most relaible software is always available. When a new application is loaded it is under 'probation' and only becomes the New Application when its 'run time' exceeds the previous applications 'run-time'. If the newly loaded application fails before this threshold time is exceeded the Router reverts automatically to the previous application version on re-boot.
Dual-Boot and Probation is another way in which ZyTrax is trying to innovate and give users the most reliable Routers we know how to...
