Q1: What is ZyFIND technology?

A: ZyFIND is a protocol developed by ZyTrax that allows a ZyTrax Router connected to the local to be ‘discovered’ (Routers respond with their IP address, serial number and Name) irrespective of the current IP addressing on the local LAN. The protocol allows the Router’s IP address to be changed in situ and without resorting to clumsy and crude solutions such as using a serial interface. to do IP address allocation and subsequent changing.

Q2: I am moving my Router from one Class C (A or B) address to another. How do I change its IP address?

A: Plug the Router into the local LAN in which it will operate, run CoolFig and specify the IP address that you want to allocate to the Router in the Router Wizard. It will fail to find the IP address on your LAN, issue a ZyFIND sequence and display a list of IP addresses. Simply double click on the one you want to change its IP address..

Q3: I don’t know the IP address of my Router, how do I find it?

A: If ZING is loaded click ‘Info’ from the menu select Diagnostic, then ‘Display Routers’ this will display a list of all ZyTrax Routers connected to your local LAN. Or load CoolFig and click on the Diagnostic button to display a list of all ZyTrax Router IP addresses connected to the local LAN. CoolFig and Control Server (NT_Ser) both support this feature as well.

Q4: When I load CoolFig (or Zing or HotFig) I get the message "zsock.ocx" not registered?

A: CoolFig (ZING and HotFig) all use a ZyTrax supplied ActiveX control called zsock.ocx which is installed in the system32 directory of your PC. If you cannot find this control in the system32 directory, re-install any of the ZyTrax supplied utilities. If the control is present it may not have registered correctly of you may have had registry problems and it has become unregistered. To register the control select ‘run’ from the ‘start bar’ and enter the command ‘regsvr32 /v zsock.ocx’ (without the quotation marks). If the operation is successful the message ‘DllSelfRegister zsock.ocx succeeded’ will appear.

Q5: What are the Zsock.ocx and Subnet.ocx files installed with CoolFig and HotFig (zsock.ocx is also used by ZING)?

A: These files are ActiveX controls. Zsock.ocx translates the socket interface and the Windows icmp.dll interface into Visual Basic friendly services. Subnet.ocx is a special control to calculate subnets and perform other specialized IP address arithmetic.

Q6: When I change certain parameters they appear to have no effect on the system operation?

A: Certain configuration parameters require you to reset your Router before they take effect. The following list indicates when parameter changes become effective:

After System Reset:

Any addition or change in the Routing Table (in SNMP zytrax/router/ip/routeTable)

When the Next Connection occurs for the Route:

Any parameter that affects the negotiation of MPPP (LCP, IPCP) (in SNMP zytrax/router/zmp zmpTable and zmpSecrets entries)

NOTE: To force a re-connection, remove the ISDN from the Router and immediately re-insert.

After an ISDN line re-initialize:

Changes to any of the Directory Numbers for the Router or ISDN configuration set by the ISDN Line Configuration window (in SNMP zytrax/router/isdnconfig)

NOTE: To force ISDN to re-initialize with the new variables either remove the power cord or remove the ISDN line and immediately re-insert).

Q7: My Router shows the IP address 192.22.22.1 when I use CoolFig or ZING diagnostics, what does this mean?

A: Each ZyTrax Router maintains its configuration details (including its IP address) in an SNMP MIB maintained in on board FLASH. If this FLASH has become corrupted for any reason it is re-initialized to the special IP address 192.22.22.1 (an Internet Test address). to restore the configuration load CoolFig, select the IP address then run Update Router (Full) from the file menu of the Toolbar button. This is a serious problem and you should also submit an incident report to ZyTrax indicating what events were taking place when this MIB loss occurred.

Q8: From CoolFig’s Router Summary window can I change any of the visible entries?

A: From version 1.1.1 unless it is marked with a red X in the icon next to the entry you can change it by simply clicking twice (not double clicking) on the entry)and enter the required value.

Q9: How do I change entries in CoolFig’s Router Summary window such as 'Type of Link' (under Routes, Route x, Remote Link details)?

A: To change these multiple choice type entries, select the required entry, click twice (not double click) and enter ANY text, CoolFig will replace with the next or alternate value allowed, repeat until the desired entry is visible.

Q10: How can I change the ‘Configuration Type’ entry in CoolFig’s Router Summary window?

A: Changing ‘Configuration Type’ cannot be done in the Router Summary window. To make this type of change select New Router from CoolFig’s File menu and enter the same IP address. CoolFig will prompt you to indicate that you already have a configuration for this Router. Select ‘Yes’ to the prompt and proceed to build up the configuration using the Router Wizard. This new configuration will replace your current configuration for the Router only when you select Update Router at the end of the Router Wizard sequence.

Q11: What is MPPP?

A: MPPP is Multilink Point-to-Point protocol defines by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in the specification rfc1990. MPPP is sometimes incorrectly referred to as ‘bonding’ (which was a rival – now moribund – specification). MPPP uses the term ‘bundling’.

Q12: I have just done a Router Update from CoolFig and forgot to turn on the logging option, can I save this data?

A: Yes, if the ‘Progress Window’ is still open, select the ‘Log..’ button which will use the Start Log (Auto) feature (log file will be in CoolFig directory with name CoolFig.txt), write the data to the log then close the log file. If the ‘Progress Window’ is not open the data is lost but you can always print the configuration details of the Router by selecting Options-> Log Config.

Q13: Can I print details of the Router Configuration from CoolFig?

A: Yes, make sure the Router Summary window for the router is visible and active then select Options -> Log Config. This will use the Start Log (Auto) feature (file written to the CoolFig directory with name CoolFig.txt) file if no log is open (or use the current log file if one is open) and write all the stored MIB parameters for the Router. You can use notepad (or any other text editor) to print the log file.

Q14: CoolFig has generated the wrong SPID how do I change the SPID?

A: There are two ways to change the SPID,

  1. . From the Router Summary window expand the 'ISDN Line Configuration' entry until the ‘SPIDs’ entries are exposed click twice (not double click) the entry you want to change and then enter the required value. CoolFig will give you a warning that it performs no vetting on the SPID.
  2. Use the ISDN Line Options window (from either the Toolbars button or the ‘View -> ISDN Configuration’ menu). Select either B1 or B2 from the Tab Control then edit the SPID.

Note: The Router Wizard should always correctly calculate the SPID. Please take a few minutes to report a bug here if you think there is an error. Please provide the area code and NXX code (the first 7 digits of the 7 digit local dialing number) involved together with the format of the SPID.

Q15: I am going from a 128K to a 64K service how do I remove the second directory number?

A: From the Router Summary window expand Routes then Route X, then Remote Link details then Remote Telephone Numbers. Place the mouse on the directory Number you want to remove and click twice (not double click) set the entry to blank (CoolFig will show <empty>). To add a second DN when moving to a 128K service select the <empty> click twice (not double click) and enter the required DN. You can also remove the Second ISDN DN (ISDN Line Configuration, Directory Numbers) SPID and any of the Low or High IP values in any Route X Table entry.

Q16: Most systems ask me to enter the NetMask why does CoolFig not ask for this value?

A: ZyTrax would say that most systems force you to enter the NetMask! We find there is a lot of confusion and errors caused by NetMask.. ZyTrax configuration software asks for the Lowest and Highest IP addresses that you want to access and then automatically calculates the minimum NetMask required. We believe our approach has a number of advantages.

  1. A NetMask is a means to an end, not an end. The desired result is to access a range of IP addresses - that’s what CoolFig asks for.
  2. CoolFig can calculate and optimize NetMask to allow optimum use of scarce IP addresses (including occasionally using the dreaded non-contiguous NetMask).
  3. If you never saw another NetMask in your life would you be sad.

Q17: In the Router Wizard Step 5 when should I use the 'All Addresses' option (Class C addresses only)?

A: If you are defining a LAN configuration which consists of a number of off-site subnets in the same Class C range as the local LAN then the Class C address range can become very fragmented. This may require multiple entries in the Routing Table to ensure that all stations are addressable from all locations. It is very easy to make a mistake. Selecting the 'All Addresses' option allows CoolFig to add the minimum Routes to ensure that all Hosts are addressable on the LAN (CoolFig will occasionally use non-contiguous NetMask when performing this operation).

Q18: What is a Class C (or B or A) IP address?

A: The Internet has defined 5 classes of IP address based on the first 3 bits of the IP address. The three most commonly used classes are A, B and C.

Class A addresses have 16,777,216 host addresses available (in tech jargon the host id is 24 bits long).

Class B addresses have 65,536 host addresses available (in tech jargon the host id is 16 bits long).

Class C addresses have 256 addresses available (in tech jargon the host id part is 8 bits long).

Increasingly Class D addresses are becoming more common because they are used in IP Multicasting.

Q19: I am having problems running ZING (gives incorrect or strange results)

A: CoolFig is written in Microsoft Visual Basic Version 6. It is possible that some of your system files are corrupt or out of date. You should obtain the latest versions of these files from Microsoft (Knowledge Base Article Number Q192461). To obtain the latest files proceed as follows:

  • Load your browser
  • Go the microsoft support Site http://support.microsoft.com
  • In the 'Knowledge Base Search' Frame
  • In Question 1 select 'Visual Basic'
  • In Question 2 click 'Specific Article ID number'
  • In box 3 enter Q192461
  • Click 'Go'
  • This will display a single entry - click on this entry to go to the article.
  • In the 'More Information' section you will find a reference to 'vbrun60.exe' clicking this will download the updated files.
  • Follow the instructions to perform the update.
  • NOTE: You should unload CoolFig prior to performing the update above.
